On January 28th E. Rivers Helen Ruffin Reading Bowl went to Bunche Middle School to compete in the District round of the reading bowl. We earned 400 point out of a possible 600 and came in second place behind Springdale Park Elementary.
Check out some of the our favorite questions at the reading bowl. This is a first grade class so into coding that they didn't want to stop to check out books!
I have signed up students in grades 1-5 with their own code.org account to code all year. They can access their account by going to the E. Rivers Media Center website and click on the coding tab. Each child has an individual avatar as their password. Happy Coding!
The winner of this year's Constitution Video contest is Gavyn Eastman! Check out his video!
Thanks to funds from last year's book fair we were able to put a Lego Wall in the Media Center this summer!
The current trend for media centers is making them into Makerspaces. Makerspaces are spaces where children can design and create using critical thinking skills, problem solving skills and creativity. I saw the idea for a Lego Wall at a technology conference I attended last year and asked Tara Harris to help me design and install the wall. Tara went above and beyond what I had seen at the tech fair and designed a wall that blends in perfectly with our decorations. It is so cool to see the children designing "science labs", "sideway bridges", "secret passages", etc. I love to walk by and try to listen into their conversations. Here are a few pictures of several of the new Makerspaces type activities we have in the media center. CHECK OUT THE PHOTOS HERE
This week students used the Media Center's Online Public Access Catalog (OPAC) posted on the media center website and used Google Forms to search for information. At the end of class we looked at the students results and clarified any misunderstandings in the lesson.
I overheard a couple of girls talking about the lesson saying, "That was really fun!" Tara Harris is at it again! As you may or may not remember, last summer Mrs. Boston asked Tara to help her decorate our new Media Center and boy did she ever!! This Summer Mrs. Boston asked Tara to help design a Lego Wall for the media center and she did. Check out the drawing! We will be working on it this summer so drop by the Media Center in the Fall and check it out. If you have any legos you would like to donate to the media center, please bring them to Mrs. Boston. Thank you! See you soon! Thanks.!! Students who love the media center decided to make a movie for Library Month! They did a fantastic job! I am so proud of all of you. :) Mrs. Boston |
